Litigation Partnership

The Public Justice Center values the time and resources that the members of the private bar contribute to expanding our capacity for litigation and other advocacy. As members of our Litigation Partnership, individual attorneys and law firms provide assistance on specific PJC projects, whether by serving as co-counsel or by offering consultation or networking. If you or your firm is interested in serving on the PJC Litigation Partnership, please contact Legal Director Debra Gardner (gardnerd@publicjustice.org, 410-625-9409 x228) for more information.

Thomas J. Minton, Esq., Goldman & Minton, P.C., talks about his experience with the Litigation Partnership:

The Public Justice Center addresses issues that are at the heart of why many of us became lawyers in the first place. The word "justice" is at the center of this organization's name--and its mission.

The work I've done side-by-side with Matt Hill and the Human Right to Housing Project effects real change for those who are most disconnected from our justice system. Just sit in rent court one day and watch. There are more than 150,000 rent cases every year in Baltimore City and the vast majority of tenants are unrepresented by counsel. Housing is one of the most basic needs in a person's life: at stake is whether or not they keep a roof over their heads. Yet, in our current system, landlords can easily obtain a judgment for eviction within seven days and with no discovery required. What better way to effect change than to co-counsel on cases that challenge the systemic eviction of tenants by landlords who abuse the process? Yes, through our settlement in a recent class action suit, we put money back in the pockets of hundreds of tenants but just as important, we reformed the questionable collection and accounting practices of a large regional landlord, benefiting thousands more tenants. That is justice in action, and I am gratified to be part of the PJC's Litigation Partnership.
