Group Begins Work on Bill Giving Montgomery County Renters More Protection from Eviction

Silver Spring delegate says just-cause bill would require landlords to give reason for refusing lease renewal

State Del. Jheanelle Wilkins of Silver Spring is continuing her push to give renters in Montgomery County more protection from being forced out of their homes.

Tenants, landlords and officials packed a room in the Silver Spring Civic Building on Tuesday night to discuss just-cause eviction, a measure that would require landlords to give a reason for refusing to renew a lease. Without this provision, renters are vulnerable to eviction without explanation when their leases are up, Wilkins, a Democrat, says.

On Tuesday night, attorneys and tenants shared stories about how this can play out.
