The reality of Gov. Hogan's Baltimore investment

January 15, 2016: The Baltimore Sun today published an op-ed from the Public Justice Center and North East Housing Initiative in response to Governor Hogan's purported $700 million initiative for demolition and development in Baltimore City.
In the op-ed, the PJC's Matt Hill and NEHI's Chris Lafferty and Ty Hullinger question whether this "investment" is really new money for development and point out that the proposal does not discuss the potential displacement of current residents, include neighborhood residents in decision-making and planning, create jobs for local people, and pursue truly comprehensive community revitalization.
Read the op-ed here.
As lawyers working in collaboration with community organizations, the Public Justice Center urges policy makers to make sure that the affected communities are involved in development decisions. Our participation in the Baltimore Housing Roundtable is an example of this kind of collaboration.
On January 28, the Baltimore Housing Roundtable will release its new white paper, Community + Land + Trust: Tools for Development without Displacement. You are invited to join us on January 28 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to explore innovative approaches to Baltimore’s development challenges, learn from area experts, and enjoy a light lunch reception.
