Tell your Senators: Urge the Judicial Proceedings Committee to vote YES on SB 520 and SB 524

March 22, 2018

Earlier this week, we asked you to urge your Delegates to support two bills that would provide much needed reform to Rent Court. Your calls paid off and the bills passed the House of Delegates! Now the fate the bills is in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

The bills will only pass out of the committee if Baltimore City Senators tell their colleagues on the committee how important these protections are for tenants. Please contact your Senator and urge them to tell the members of the Judicial Proceedings Committee to support SB 520 and SB 524.

SB 520 would provide Baltimore City tenants a minimum 7-days notice before trial in Rent Court. Right now, renters sometimes only get a day's notice before an eviction trial. SB 520 would give tenants time to ask their employer for a shift change, find a babysitter, or obtain free legal services.

SB 524 would dismiss eviction actions when the landlord cannot show a valid lead paint certificate. Landlords should not be able to use Rent Court if they cannot guarantee the safety of the homes they rent out.

Please call your Senator today ask them to tell the Judicial Proceedings Committee to vote YES on SB 520 and SB 524.

Thank you!
