Eviction right to counsel efforts make progress in Los Angeles and Cleveland

September 17, 2019: The movement for a right to counsel in eviction cases continues to pick up steam in cities across the country. The National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel, which is staffed by the PJC, provides technical, research, and writing support to the local leaders organizing on the front lines. In recent weeks, the Los Angeles County Supervisors passed a motion that will fund right to counsel eviction pilot projects at five sites with $2 million in funding and that requires the City to identify the remaining $12.5 million to fully implement an eviction right to counsel. And the Cleveland City Council is considering a newly-introduced bill that would provide a right to counsel for families with children facing eviction who are at or below 100% of the federal poverty line. Check out the latest developments from Los Angeles and Cleveland on the NCCRC website.
