PJC New Film: The Silent Epidemic: Dental Disease Among Maryland's Children

The Public Justice Center, in conjunction with The Megaphone Project and Advocates for Children and Youth, has produced The Silent Epidemic: Dental Disease Among Maryland's Children. (Click here to view the video on YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=s7tGk2sZSGg ). The 7-minute video vividly shows the devastating consequences of the lack of access to dental care for Maryland's low-income children, and encourages lawmakers to implement reforms intended to address the oral health care crisis. The targeted reforms emerged from the broad-based Dental Action Committee, upon which the PJC's Laurie Norris served during the summer of 2007. Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Secretary John Colmers has put his full support behind the DAC's seven main recommendations, and the Governor has included part of the necessary funding in the FY 2009 budget, currently being considered in Annapolis by the General Assembly. Advocates will be using the video to encourage legislators to vote for the budget allocations, and to pass other legislative measures needed to implement the recommended reforms.
