Levern and Brenda celebrate 15 years at the PJC

PJC family and friends gathered at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston on May 29 to celebrate Brenda Midkiff and Levern Blackmon’s 15 years of service to the PJC. Executive Director John Nethercut shared these remarks:

“Levern is the PJC’s Tenant Advocate, representing tenants in eviction court in Baltimore City. Over the years, Levern has had a hand in several significant actions. He helped find and investigate un-served eviction complaints that, under threat of lawsuit, curbed the number of evictions scheduled each day, reformed service procedures, and resulted in the Rent Court Workgroup. In 2004, Levern helped create the Rental Housing Coalition, which led to clean streets legislation in Baltimore City in 2007 and strengthening tenant protections against retaliation in 2011. Above all, Levern is devoted to his individual clients, and consistently receives notes of gratitude for his assistance.”
“We all rely heavily on Brenda to run the ship. She joined the PJC in January 1998 as the sole receptionist, intake specialist, and support staff. As the PJC grew, she transitioned into her role as office manager. Over time, she’s taken on accounting, audits, financial reports, personnel and benefits. She’s the tough guy behind any spending decisions, but she’s also the champion of the individual employee, making sure employees are treated fairly and get the benefits they deserve.”
