Legislative Alert - Don't Hold Law Clinics Hostage

CALL YOUR DELEGATE TODAY AND TELL THEM TO VOTE AGAINST ANY PROPOSAL THAT CONDITIONS RECEIPT OF FUNDS BY THE LAW SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY ON REPORTING ABOUT CLIENTS.

We need your help to turn back a blatant attempt to stifle the University of Maryland's Law Clinic.  As noted in the following articles in the Baltimore Sun and the Daily Record, the Environmental Law Clinic of the University of Maryland's School of Law is representing environmentalists who are suing Perdue Farms and family farmers under the Clean Water Act, alleging they pollute the Chesapeake Bay. Eastern Shore lawmakers have backed provisions in budget bills that withhold funding on the condition that the School of Law report on individual cases and clients in its clinics  – in violation of an attorney's ethical obligations in the Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct.  The amendments also seek a report on the policies and practices public law school clinics around the country use in selecting cases. We understand that total impact to the Law School budget if the amendments succeed could be as much as $1,000,000.

This is a blatant attempt by powerful interests to try to bully the law school’s clinical programs, which represents thousands of people throughout the state who otherwise would not have attorneys.

Please call or email your delegate and ask them to vote against any proposal that conditions receipt of funds by the law school and university on reporting about clients.
