SB 312 – a bill that would limit employers’ ability to use peoples’ credit checks in hiring and employment unless it is truly related to the job at issue – is going for a vote before the Senate Finance Committee NOW.  The Public Justice Center is concerned that this bill, which provides a sensible and moderate limitation to employers’ use of credit history checks, may be in trouble.  As we all know, credit history reports are designed to determine credit worthiness, not job worthiness.  Moreover, credit histories can have errors and in this economy, the use of such checks puts struggling Maryland workers in a Catch 22 – they fall on difficult economic times, possibly even face foreclosure, their credit scores go down, and then they cannot get a job because of bad credit.
