This month, the Public Justice Center and fellow members of the Maryland Education Coalition sent a letter to State Superintendent Karen Salmon urging the Maryland State Department of Education to incorporate equity principles in a substantive way as schools discern how to best serve students during the COVID-19 pandemic (referenced in the Baltimore Sun here). The letter recommends ten principles that MSDE should adopt in its plan and require the local school systems to expressly incorporate them into their local return/recovery plans, specifying how the school system will address each principle under each model of education under consideration, whether all distance learning, a hybrid model of distance and in-person, or all in-person.
